This is a self-reflection of myself throughout this semester.
To start off, I wasn’t quite sure what I should’ve expected from this class. I was definitely nervous that I wouldn’t perform well since I wasn’t really sure what to expect. However, after working throughout this semester, I believe my opinion on this class has definitely changed. This class has taught me some valuable lessons after working both, by myself and with a group. I was able to learn a lot more about how English and writing go into engineering. Thanks to Professor Brown’s opening us up as well as engaging us in activities that connect English to engineering, I believe I have a clearer understanding of how these two subjects are connected. Additionally, when I was working with my group, group four, it taught me how to communicate and coordinate with other students. Due to COVID restrictions, this class was held virtually. This made seeing my partners difficult. Therefore, we had to rely on technology in order to communicate and complete our tasks. When we first started working together as a group, we stumbled into many various minor technical difficulties. Since we weren’t able to meet in person, this brought about its own problems. However, thanks to the creativity of myself and my classmates, we were able to figure out a lot of problems and fix them. Another skill I gained was a sense of leadership and guidance throughout our group project. My groupmates often found themselves confused and came to me for guidance, which I was able to help with. Thanks to working with a group, I learned how to be more self-sufficient as well as relying on people to do what they are supposed to do.
When the course first started, and I was assigned my first assignment, I was definitely a little nervous. But after seeing how interactive and fun Professor Brown made the course, it helped ease tension and even made me look forward to completing work for her class. Throughout this course, Professor Brown introduced us to various projects and assignments that made me think outside the box and engaged me in various ways. For example, for the first few assignments, we were assigned work that would help us see how engineering and writing are related to each other. Additionally, I learned how to give better peer feedback. When we were tasked with asking questions and providing feedback to our peers, it was, at first, extremely difficult to give thoughtful and meaningful feedback. However, after constantly writing feedback, it got easier to think of better questions that allowed for more thought-provoking and complex writing. I also learned how to take feedback too! Since this was one of my first times receiving feedback, it gave me a better insight as to how I was doing. Getting peer feedback was also something I wasn’t used to. My writing improved significantly after receiving peer feedback. So all in all, I believe, that after taking this class, has introduced us to real-life English engineering scenarios and has given me a better understanding of how English and engineering go hand in hand with each other. I also believe taking this course has helped me in terms of my writing. Overall, it has helped me become a more sophisticated, creative, and professional writer.
When we were put into groups for our engineering proposal, it taught me a lot of important skills. One skill I learned from working with a group was learning how to be responsible and how to communicate with others. In order to maintain our schedule and allow for fluency between us, we had to all learn how to communicate with each other as strangers. Although we did all our communication virtually, there were still various barriers we had to go through. One issue The biggest issues we had were the scheduling of tasks that needed to be done by when, as well as when one of us didn’t have an internet connection, which can make it really difficult to communicate. This taught me how important it is to communicate with your peers to get the job done. When I went to do my military training, I communicated with my teammates in order to help me finish some work I wasn’t able to do. Being in a group has also taught me how to help and lead others. I found myself in many instances where my group mates came to me seeking guidance and support. This in turn gave me a sense of comradery. But overall, this taught me how to lead and help others. I was also able to delegate tasks to my peers and learned how to depend on people to do certain tasks since I’m always used to doing all the work in group projects. It felt good to be able to rely on my teammates in order to finish tasks.
In conclusion, after taking this course, I believe I have improved a lot in many different areas. One area I improved on is my writing. When I first started this class, I wasn’t really good at giving or receiving peer feedback. However, after taking this course, I believe I have improved my ability to give meaningful as well as thoughtful feedback to my peers. Thanks to both giving and receiving peer feedback, it has helped my writing overall. Additionally, due to the creativity and complexity of some of the assignments, they helped me think outside of the box in terms of answering them. Additionally, this course has taught me how to work together with other people in a virtual environment. While I worked with my peers, I learned how to multitask as well as delegate tasks to my peers in order to get work done. Some of the challenges I endured during our group project were a lack of communication at the beginning, as well as some timing of our assignments along with our schedules. However, even after all these issues, I was able to overcome them. While I overcame these obstacles, I learned what it means to work in a group. So all in all, I think I did really well this semester.
