Lab Reports Reflection & Podcast

The lab report assignment was meaningful to me in a few ways. This is because of the topic I choose. I decided to report and analyze an experiment that has a real-world significance. The experiment was about greenhouse gasses and their effects on the temperature of the water. The results from this investigation were eye-opening. In mere minutes the temperature of the water inside the bottle had risen almost ten degrees! This was very shocking to me because I never really thought that the effects of greenhouse gasses were so devastating. After researching and analyzing this experiment, I can now walk away with some newfound skills. One skill I gained was researching. Before I only looked at one page and stuck with it, Now I looked up multiple sites with varying results and was able to get a better idea of the results. Another skill I learned was revising my work. Thanks to Professor Brown and her previous homework as well as the help of my peers, I was able to revise my work and add sections to my work that helped me expand on my ideas. I enjoyed this assignment because it granted me the creativity and freedom to research something I know little about. I am proud of this assignment because I was able to learn something new, especially something I know little about. I was able to determine its significance as well as the potential results it could have. I hope our future potential engineers are able to see the results of my research and develop ways to help combat greenhouse gas emissions.

The podcast I choose to work on was Elijah Jones’s Podcast on Writing Questions. I choose this podcast for a few different reasons. One reason is that I wanted to know more about engineering, although he does electrical engineering, he works alongside people who do other types of engineering. I wanted to see what it’s like being a leader to people and what they have to endure. I also wanted to see how writing affected people in a similar career field as myself. After listening to the podcast, It has opened my eyes to a few different things. One thing Mr. Jones talked about was job-hopping. After listening to a few other podcasters, it seems that in order to make more money is to hop from one job to another because they pay you more money and/or give you better benefits. He also talked about how his college/school didn’t necessarily prepare him for an actual job. The school taught him the fundamentals while the job essentially just “retaught” him new stuff that’s essential for that job. He also talked about emails and how they should be clear of emotion and uses bullet points to get the point across. So in conclusion, writing in engineering after listening to the podcast has a very fundamental place in our society. If it wasn’t for writing, people wouldn’t be able to gain information as easily. Elijah, for example, used bullet points to communicate with his workers as well as uses writing to take notes of important information. This ranges from what parts go into what machines to making and designing circuit boards.
